The Wire
A Field Manual to the Web's Machinery
A field manual for the machinery under every page view, written as a phone call: look up the number, dial, shake hands, ask, answer. DNS, HTTPS, status codes and the rest each get a plain-English entry — and then the manual points at the real thing happening live in a working estate of sites: an actual 404, a fresh DNS cut, a concierge server that answers 403 to strangers.
It exists because the web's plumbing is usually taught in abstractions, and abstractions don't stick. Tying every term to a machine you can actually visit — this server, this domain, this refusal — turns jargon into geography.
What to take from it: explain infrastructure with a working example you own. A status code memorised is trivia; a status code you've watched your own server send is knowledge.
