Every region of the window, every shortcut worth knowing, every tool explained in plain English — organized the order you'll actually need it, not the order Apple's menus put it in.

HOW TO USE THIS

Scan it, don't read it top to bottom. Open Logic side by side with this page, jump to whatever matches what you're stuck on via the list on the left. Sections build roughly in the order a real song gets made: record → edit → arrange → mix. Section 15 gives you a full suggested order if you want a plan instead of a lookup tool. Each section carries its own color — that color repeats in the nav on the left, so you can jump straight back to "the green one" or "the blue one" from memory.

The Interface

Before any shortcut matters, you need to know what you're looking at. Logic's main window is five regions stacked and nested together — once you can name them, every tutorial and menu makes sense.

Control Bar

Transport, tempo, time display — customizable, lives at the very top.

Inspector

Parameters for whatever's selected — a track's channel strip, or a region's settings.

Tracks Area

The timeline. Every region you record or drag in lives here.

Mixer

One channel strip per track, plus busses and the master. Toggle with X.

AControl Bar

Play, stop, record, cycle, tempo, and the time/bars display live here. Right-click it to add or remove buttons — things like Low Latency Mode or a Solo button aren't shown by default, but you'll want them visible.

BTracks Area

The main timeline. Every audio or MIDI region you record, drag in, or create lives here, arranged left to right in time and stacked top to bottom by track.

CInspector

Context-sensitive — it shows parameters for whatever you've clicked on. Select a track for its channel strip; select a region for its own settings on top.

DMixer

Every track gets a channel strip — fader, pan, inserts, sends. Toggle with X or 2. This is where mixing actually happens.

EEditors

Piano Roll, Score Editor, Step Editor, Audio File Editor — open at the bottom of the main window or as their own windows, where you fix the notes and audio inside a region.

FToolbar

A row of buttons above the Tracks area for editing tools — separate from the Control Bar, and also fully customizable if it's cluttering your view.

The single most useful habit to build early: everything in Logic is a menu away from being explained. Right-click almost anything — a track header, a region, a plug-in slot — and you get a contextual menu of exactly what you can do to it. When in doubt, right-click first.

Recording

Start here

Everything else in this guide exists to shape something you've recorded. There are two kinds of tracks — Audio and Software Instrument — and the setup differs slightly for each.

Recording audio

Create an Audio track, set its Input to match your interface, arm the track (the record-enable dot turns red), and hit R. Turn on Input Monitoring if you need to hear yourself — Logic often auto-monitors armed tracks, but check the button is lit.

Recording MIDI (Software Instrument)

Create a Software Instrument track, pick a sound from the Library, arm it, play in real time from a MIDI controller. No controller? K opens Musical Typing — a virtual keyboard on your QWERTY keys, good enough to sketch an idea with nothing plugged in.

Common mix-up: K opens Musical Typing, not the Key Commands window. That's K. Easy one to get backwards — see Section 14.

Cycle recording & takes

Turn on Cycle (C), drag across a range in the ruler to set the loop, then record. Every pass becomes a new Take, packed into a Take Folder — how you record ten attempts at a vocal line without ten separate tracks. Full comping workflow in Section 05.

Punch recording — Quick Punch

Punch in and out on the fly during playback with a key command, no pre-planning needed. Good for fixing one bad line without stopping the tape.

Punch recording — Autopunch

Pre-define the exact punch-in/out points in the ruler. Logic only records inside that window — combine with Cycle to rehearse a tricky bar repeatedly.

Replace mode (MIDI only)

Overwrites MIDI instead of stacking takes. Four flavors: Region Erase, Region Punch, Content Erase, Content Punch — erase-whole-region vs. erase-notes-only, crossed with whole-pass vs. punch-range-only.

Start here

The keys your hand should learn before any other. All are visible and searchable inside Logic's own Key Commands window (K) — if a combo below feels wrong on your machine, that window is the final word, not this page.

The Tool Menu

Logic edits with cursor "tools" rather than persistent modes — press T to open the Tool menu and see everything available, or use the number shortcuts directly.

The trick worth knowing: you don't have to switch tools to borrow one for a second. Logic lets you assign a modifier key that, held while you click, briefly acts as a different tool — hold a key to snip with Scissors while your main tool stays Pointer. Set it up in Key Commands; once it's muscle memory it removes most of the back-and-forth switching entirely.

Takes & Comping

Once recording clicks

Comping is building one great take out of several good ones — standard practice for vocals and solos.

Cycle-record several passes

Each pass through your loop becomes a Take, automatically bundled into a Take Folder.

Set the folder to Quick Swipe Comping

Click the pop-up in the top-left corner of the Take Folder and confirm it's the active mode.

Swipe across the best sections

Drag across whichever stretch of each take lane sounds best. Extending one section shortens its neighbor — Logic never leaves a gap.

Reassign or nudge as needed

Change your mind about which take a section comes from, or drag a boundary a few milliseconds to catch a breath more cleanly.

Track Alternatives is the track-level version of the same idea — instead of comping within one track's take lanes, it builds entire alternate versions of a track without duplicating it. Comping answers "which of these ten takes was best." Track Alternatives answers "let me try a completely different version of this part."

MIDI Editing

Four editors handle MIDI, each suited to a different kind of work. You'll live in the Piano Roll most of the time.

Piano Roll

The main note editor — pitch is vertical position, length is horizontal width. Drag to move, resize, repitch. A MIDI Draw lane at the bottom handles velocity, pitch bend, CC data.

  • Q — quantize with the current setting
  • / — transpose by semitone
  • / — transpose by octave

Step Editor

A grid of vertical bars — each bar is one MIDI event, height is its value, lanes stack by event type. Slower to sketch in, but more precise for drum grids or exact controller moves.

Score Editor

Standard music notation. Best for reading or printing a part, not primary composing — its quantize display is visual only unless applied to the underlying timing.

Step Input

Enter notes one at a time without playing in real time — for parts that are rhythmically exact but awkward to perform, like a fast arpeggio or orchestral line.

Quantization, properly understood

Q-Strength
How rigidly notes snap to the grid, 0–100%. Full strength is mechanically perfect and often lifeless; 60–80% tightens timing while keeping a human feel.
Q-Range
Notes already close enough to the grid get left alone entirely — only the further-off notes get pulled in.
Groove Templates
Capture the actual timing feel of one great take ("Make Groove Template") and apply that feel to other regions — grid-perfect becomes pocket-perfect.

Smart Tempo solves the opposite problem: a performance that wasn't played to a click. It can conform a free recording to project tempo (Keep), conform your tempo to what you just played (Adapt), or decide automatically (Automatic). The tool for importing a guitar idea you hummed with no metronome.

Flex Time & Flex Pitch

The "aha" features

Two non-destructive tools that fix timing and pitch after a take is recorded — Logic's built-in answer to Melodyne, no third-party plug-in required.

Flex Time

Corrects timing without slicing and sliding audio by hand. Turn on with F, choose a mode per track: Slicing / Rhythmic for drums, Monophonic for a single line, Polyphonic for chords, Speed/Tempophone for extreme stretches. Picking the right mode for the material matters.

Flex Pitch

Pitch-corrects monophonic audio without touching timing. Each detected note shows as a bar with five draggable hotspots: pitch drift at start, vibrato depth, pitch drift at end, gain, fine tuning, formant shift.

When to reach for which: out of time but in tune needs Flex Time. Out of tune but in time needs Flex Pitch. Most real vocal takes need a light touch of both — timing first, then pitch, since timing edits can shift what Flex Pitch has detected.

Arrangement Tools

Once you have more than a handful of tracks, these keep a session navigable and let you restructure a song without manually dragging forty regions.

Track Stack — Folder

Groups tracks under one header. The stack's main fader becomes a VCA-style master — move it and every track underneath scales together, keeping their relative balance.

Track Stack — Summing

Does everything a Folder Stack does, plus routes every sub-track to a shared bus, turning the stack into a real subgroup — insert one compressor across a whole drum group.

Marker Track

Tags positions on the timeline — verse, chorus, drop — for fast navigation and talking about the song with collaborators in plain terms.

Arrangement Track

Turns song sections into draggable blocks. Move the "Chorus" block earlier and every region inside it moves too — test "what if the chorus hit sooner" instantly.

Global Tracks (toggle G) is the umbrella for all of the above plus Tempo, Time/Key Signature, Transposition, Chord, and Beat Mapping tracks — each governs the whole song rather than one track.

Mixing & the Channel Strip

Once there's a mix to shape

Every track's signal flows through its channel strip top to bottom, in a fixed order. Understanding that order tells you where to insert what.

Stock plug-ins worth knowing by name

Channel EQ

8-band parametric EQ with a real-time analyzer — your everyday, reach-for-it-first EQ.

Compressor

Several circuit-type emulations — Platinum, Vintage FET, Vintage Opto, Vintage VCA, Studio VCA — each with a genuinely different character.

Space Designer

Convolution reverb using real impulse responses. Reach for it when realism matters — vocals, acoustic instruments.

ChromaVerb

Algorithmic reverb, 14 room models, lighter on CPU than Space Designer, more tunable for a creative space.

Delay Designer

Multi-tap delay — up to 26 taps, each with its own time, level, pan, filter. Built for rhythmic or granular delay effects.

Sends & busses

Routes a copy of a signal to a shared Aux channel — put every vocal and guitar through the same reverb without loading the plug-in per track.

Automation

Automation records a parameter's movement over time — a fader riding into the chorus, a filter opening over eight bars. Toggle lanes with A; the mode changes what happens when you touch a control during playback.

Read

Plays automation back. Moving a control does nothing to the data.

Touch

Override live by touching a control — releases back to the original curve.

Latch

Like Touch, but the new value sticks after you let go.

Write

Overwrites everything from playback start, touched or not. Use with care.

Trim

Offsets the existing curve up or down, keeping its original shape.

Day-to-day, Latch is what you'll reach for most — forgiving to draw a rough pass with, and you can fine-tune the curve by hand after. Save Write for when you genuinely want to blow away everything that's there.

Software Instruments

Logic ships with a genuinely deep instrument collection. You don't need all of it — these are the ones worth actually learning.

Quick Sampler

Drag any audio file in, instantly playable. Four modes: Original, One Shot, Slice (by transient), Loop. Fastest way to turn a found sound into an instrument.

Drum Machine Designer

Feed it a loop and it slices by transient, auto-assigning each slice to its own pad — an instant, re-programmable kit from one loop.

ES2

A classic three-oscillator subtractive synth. If you want to understand synthesis rather than browse presets, learn on this one.

Alchemy

The flagship instrument — sampling, additive, spectral, granular engines in one, with deep morphing. Essential once you're chasing a specific sound.

Sampler

The full multi-sample instrument builder (formerly EXS24) — velocity layers, round-robin, key zones. For a serious, properly playable instrument.

Sound Library

Managed from its own browser — "Get All" downloads every pack; individual packs can be deleted later, sizes shown per pack.

The AI Tools (Logic Pro 11)

Newer, on Apple Silicon

Apple added a genuinely useful set of on-device AI tools in Logic Pro 11. These require Apple Silicon (M1 or later) — they won't appear on an Intel Mac.

Stem Splitter

Select any audio region, open its Functions menu, split it into up to six stems — Vocals, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Other — entirely on-device. Bundle unwanted stems into one submix for an instant "vocals + instrumental" split.

ChromaGlow

Analog-style saturation, under the channel strip's Distortion menu. Four Models — Retro Tube, Modern Tube, Magnetic, Analog Preamp — each with several Styles. Sparingly across a mix bus for glue, or heavier on one element for character.

Mastering Assistant

Insert on the master Output strip once your mix is done. Targets roughly –14 LUFS with a –1 dBFS true-peak ceiling. Four Character presets: Clean, Punch, Transparent, Valve. Use Loudness Compensation when A/B-ing, or "louder always sounds better" will trick your ears.

Session Players

AI musicians reading your Chord Track. Drummer uses an XY pad for complexity/loudness plus Swing, Fills, and Follow. Bassist generates lines with slides and dead notes. Keyboardist offers five styles — Freely, Broken, Block, Arpeggiated, Pad.

Order of operations that actually works: build your Chord Track first, then bring in a Session Player. Stem Splitter and ChromaGlow don't depend on anything and can be reached for any time. Mastering Assistant is always last, once a mix genuinely exists to master.

Bounce & Export

"Bounce" and "Export" both mean turning what's in Logic into a standalone audio file — the difference is scope.

Bounce Project / Section
File → Bounce → Project or Section. Mixes everything currently audible in the chosen range down to one file — your finished stereo mix.
Bounce in Place
Renders a single region — plug-ins, automation, and all — into a fresh audio region right in the Tracks area. Freeze a CPU-heavy track, or commit a comp to one clean file.
Stem export
Select the tracks or Track Stacks you want as stems, then File → Export → Tracks as Audio Files. Set range, format, bit depth, whether automation and effects are included — what you send to a mixing engineer.

Power-User Tricks

Once the fundamentals are automatic

None of these are essential on day one. All of them save real time once Logic stops feeling unfamiliar.

Live in Key Commands

K — a fully searchable list of every command and its shortcut. "Surely there's a faster way to do this" — almost always yes, and this window is where you find it.

Screensets

Save an entire window layout — a "Recording" screenset, a "Mixing" screenset — and snap between them instantly. Enormous time-saver once a project has several windows in play.

Smart Controls

A small panel of knobs mapped to several deep parameters at once, so you tweak a sound's character with two or three knobs instead of hunting nested plug-in windows.

Color-code & icon tracks

Assign a color and icon per track or Track Stack. Cosmetic until a session has forty tracks — then it's the difference between finding the lead vocal instantly and hunting for it.

Apple Loops

Royalty-free loops that auto-conform to your project's tempo and key. Turn your own recordings into taggable, searchable loops for reuse.

Notes

A place to jot lyrics, reminders, or to-dos directly inside the project — keeps context with the song instead of a separate app.

Your Learning Path

If you'd rather follow an order than jump around: this mirrors how a real song gets made, so each stage's tools are the ones the next stage assumes you already have.

Stage 1

Get oriented, then record something

Learn the five regions in Section 01, record one audio take and one MIDI take just to feel arm → monitor → record in your hands. Don't edit yet.

Stage 2

Transport & the Tool menu

Drill Space, R, C, and split/copy/repeat until automatic. Learn Pointer, Pencil, Scissors — the vocabulary everything else is written in.

Stage 3

Cycle-record and comp a real take

Record five passes, build one good comp with Quick Swipe Comping. The first moment Logic feels genuinely powerful.

Stage 4

Piano Roll and basic quantize

Fix a MIDI part's timing by hand, then let Q-Strength do it at 70–80% instead of 100%, so it tightens without flattening the feel.

Stage 5

Structure the song

Add Markers for verse/chorus, group drums into a Folder Stack, try the Arrangement track to reorder a section without touching a region by hand.

Stage 6

Flex Time, then Flex Pitch

Fix a timing problem first — easier concept — then move to pitch correction once dragging hotspots feels natural.

Stage 7

Mix what you've built

Channel strip anatomy, an EQ pass, a compressor, one shared reverb send. Then, once there's a mix worth shaping over time, learn automation — start in Latch.

Stage 8

Sound design and the AI layer

Quick Sampler and Drum Machine Designer first — fast, tactile. Then ES2 for real synthesis. Bring in Stem Splitter, a Chord Track plus Session Players, finally Mastering Assistant once a real mix exists.

Stage 9

Speed layer

Screensets, Smart Controls, Track Alternatives, your own Key Commands. Add these once the fundamentals are automatic — not before.
