Field study · July 2026 3 galleries · 40+ sites sampled · live sweep

Premium, decoded.

What the internet's best-dressed websites are actually wearing this year — measured, not guessed.

Three fresh inspiration feeds sit beyond the awards circuit: MaxiBestof, Site of Sites, and Webdesign-Inspiration. We scraped all three on one day in July 2026, ran a typeface census across a full feed page, and autopsied three showcased sites down to their hex values and border radii. The premium formula turns out to be legible, specific, and copyable. Here it is — demonstrated by the page you're reading.

Every entry is tagged with its identified typefaces — each linking to pairings and alternatives. The only gallery that answers "what font is that?"

  • Start at ✦ MaxiBestof Picks, the favourites stream
  • Mine the Japanese category — 600+ sites, a design tradition of its own

Browse by style tag — Big Type, Grid, Scrollitelling, Mode switching, 3D elements, Creative coding. The taxonomy is a menu of current techniques.

  • "Website of the week" = the taste-setting stream

The typeface census

One MaxiBestof feed page · ~30 sites · 2026-07-12
Voice 1 — the workhorse

Neo-grotesk

Carries everything: nav, headings, body. Swiss, tight, unglamorous on purpose.

Suisse Int'l · Neue Haas Grotesk · Helvetica Now · Univers · Unica77 · Neue Montreal · Söhne · TT Commons · Messina Sans · Saans · Roobert · KH Teka · National 2 — the quiet-luxury uniform

Voice 2 — the metadata

Mono

Labels, eyebrows, specs, timestamps. The engineering voice that signals precision.

Geist Mono · Space Mono · IBM Plex Mono · Roboto Mono · Suisse Int'l Mono · Pitch Sans

Voice 3 — the emotional note

Serif, italic

One line per screen. The human aside inside the Swiss machine.

GT Alpina · GT Sectra · Scotch Text · Caslons Egyptian · STK Bureau Serif · WT Kormelink · Playfair

Free stand-ins that don't read as slop Geist + Geist Mono · IBM Plex Mono · Space Mono · Funnel Display (observed live on a website-of-the-week) · Times New Roman, used on purpose. Avoid the flagged slop faces: Fraunces, Instrument Sans.

And the census's best punchline: a premium health-tech site shipping Times New Roman — the "default" font, set with total intent. That's the whole game: nothing accidental.

03

The formula — five laws

Numbered because it's a recipe
LAW 01

Typography is the brand

Two or three voices with strict jobs — or one typeface with total discipline (Rejouice runs Suisse Int'l alone). The logo barely matters; the type system is the identity.

Live — the three voices of this page
Grotesk does the work. MONO LABELS THE DATA · 2026-07-12 And the serif says the human thing.
LAW 02

Monochrome first, one signal colour

Off-white ground, near-black ink, exactly one saturated accent doing all the pointing. Colour arrives through photography and video — never through UI chrome.

Measured — grounds & inks from the sweep
#F0F0F0
#2B2B2B
#101010
#F3350C
LAW 03

Radius zero

Every premium site audited: border-radius 0. Sharp corners are the current "designed, not templated" tell. Rounded survives at the consumer-tool end; the craft tier is square.

Same button, two verdicts
Let's talk Let's talk 0px reads designed · 14px reads template
LAW 04

The scale jump is violent

80px+ heroes against 14–16px body — a 5–6:1 jump with tight leading and negative tracking. Middle sizes are skipped on purpose; mono eyebrows stand in for the missing mid-weights.

Measured — undercurrents.show
84px over 14px body text. The gap is the hierarchy — nothing in between.
RATIO 6:1 · LEADING 0.9 · TRACKING −0.04EM
LAW 05

The grid shows, motion reveals

Hairline rules and visible structure; scroll does narrative work. The motion vocabulary: masked text rises, ↗ arrows as the universal affordance, hovers that displace rather than glow. Every section of this page enters exactly this way.

Live — the masked rise (respects reduced-motion) Motion is a reveal, not a decoration.

05

The verdict

The anti-template look is calcifying into a template. Laws one through five are the floor — every studio can copy them, and by next year every AI will. The signature is the one rule you break on purpose: Times New Roman in a Swiss layout, an ugly colour worn confidently, a system font set like it cost money.

STEP 1

Pick the school

The Greatest Websites canon — WebGL world, scroll story, editorial type, or product benchmark.

STEP 2

Dress it current

This shelf: three voices, monochrome + one signal, radius zero, violent scale, exposed grid.

STEP 3

Break one rule

Deliberately. That deviation is the signature — the part they remember.

STEP 4

Hold the gate

The Top-0.1% acceptance gate: mobile-first, reduced-motion, one flawless signature moment.

FULL DISCLOSURE: this page wears the uniform it describes — #F0F0F0 ground, #141414 ink, one #F3350C signal, three type voices, radius zero, masked reveals. That's the demonstration. The Times italic you keep noticing? That's law six.
